NDD & Utilities

What Is Non-Destructive Digging and When Do You Need It?

Non-Destructive Digging (NDD) — also called vacuum excavation or hydrovac excavation — is the process of using high-pressure water and a vacuum system to safely excavate soil around underground utilities without the risk of mechanical damage to services.

It is widely regarded as one of the safest ways to dig near live underground assets, and it's increasingly specified on infrastructure projects across NSW.

How NDD Works

A NDD rig uses two systems simultaneously. High-pressure water (typically 1,000-5,000 PSI) is directed at the ground to break up soil. A powerful vacuum simultaneously removes the slurry — loosened soil and water — into a debris tank on the truck. What's left is a clean excavation that exposes utilities without any mechanical contact.

Traditional plant excavation — buckets, augers, and breakers — cannot detect or safely avoid underground services. A standard excavator bucket exerts several tonnes of force. An unregistered gas line or fibre optic cable has no chance against it.

When Is NDD Required?

Dial Before You Dig — What It Does and Doesn't Tell You

Dial Before You Dig (DBYD) plans show the registered location of underground assets from registered asset owners. They are an essential starting point, but they have significant limitations that every site supervisor must understand.

DBYD plans show asset locations to typically plus or minus 1 metre accuracy. They do not show unregistered assets — private services, abandoned lines, or assets installed before mandatory registration. On any site older than 20 years, unregistered services are almost a certainty.

NDD physically verifies what is in the ground. It does not rely on plans. This is why project managers who've seen service strikes always insist on NDD for any critical excavation.

Cost vs Risk

A single utility strike can cost tens of thousands of dollars in emergency response, reparations, project shutdown costs, regulatory fines, and increased insurance premiums. NDD costs a fraction of any one of those line items. The business case is straightforward for any professional contractor.
