If you are comparing mobile welders, no two quotes look the same. That is normal, because the price depends on the job, the site and the steel, not on a single rate. This guide explains what moves a mobile welding quote up or down, so you can describe your job properly and compare written quotes like for like. It has no prices or rates in it, because any figure would be a guess without seeing your job.
Grana Works organises and manages mobile and workshop welding and fabrication across Greater Sydney, including through trusted specialist partners where a job needs them. You deal with one point of contact from the first photo to sign-off.
A mobile welder brings the welding equipment to you, so the trip is part of the job. How far the welder has to travel, and how many visits the job needs, is allowed for in the quote. A job that needs a measure-up visit before an install visit involves more travel than a single repair.
Grana Works is based at 19/55 Anderson Road, Smeaton Grange, so Campbelltown, Narellan and Camden are among our shortest trips: see mobile welding Campbelltown & Macarthur. The rest of Greater Sydney is mobilised from Smeaton Grange, and the Illawarra, the Central Coast and Newcastle are quoted by distance. Larger jobs are quoted by distance too. Regional pages: Western Sydney, Sydney South and Botany Bay, Illawarra and Wollongong and Central Coast and Newcastle. You can also check your suburb on the service areas page.
Time spent getting to the steel is time on the job. Access questions that change a quote include:
Mild and structural steel are our core work. For stainless steel or aluminium, tell us the grade and finish when you enquire so we can confirm the right process and welder. Different metals can need different consumables and preparation, which affects both materials and time.
Thickness matters too. Thicker steel generally needs more weld metal, more passes and more preparation than thin sheet, and thin sheet needs careful heat control. Condition matters as well: rusted, cracked or previously repaired steel may need cutting out and re-plating rather than a simple weld, and some jobs need new steel supplied. Photos with something for scale, and a note of any measurements you have, help a lot.
We use MIG, stick (MMAW) and flux-cored processes to suit the job and the conditions on site. The right process depends on the material, the thickness, the position of the weld and whether the work is indoors or outdoors, where wind and weather can affect the choice. The process changes the equipment, consumables and time a job needs.
A single gate hinge repair and a list of ten items are different jobs, even at the same address. Scope questions that change a quote include:
For larger or structural work, the engineer’s drawings and the Australian Standards nominated for your job set the scope. Tell us what your drawings require when you request a quote and we will confirm who can carry out the work before you commit. Our welding and fabrication buyer’s guide covers what to check before you hire.
Raw, primed, painted, powder coated or hot-dip galvanised steel are priced differently, so decide the finish before you ask for a quote. Welding damages existing coatings, so ask how the weld area will be repaired afterwards. Old paint, rust and coatings may have to be cleaned back before welding, and that preparation takes time.
Work that has to happen on a tight date, around a shutdown or outside normal hours is planned differently from work with flexible timing. Shutdown and out-of-hours windows can be discussed. Hours are Monday to Friday, 6am to 6pm Sydney time. We do not advertise 24/7 or emergency call-out, so for urgent work message us on WhatsApp during business hours and we will confirm what is possible.
Fire restrictions can also change timing. On a NSW RFS Total Fire Ban day, general-purpose welding, grinding and gas cutting in the open is not allowed without an exemption, so outdoor hot work may need to be rescheduled or moved into a workshop or enclosed building where the job allows it.
Many sites require inductions, hot-work permits, a fire watch after welding stops, or specific documents before work can start. On-site welding is hot work, and where your site requires it we plan the job around permits, with extinguishers and screens on hand. Time spent on inductions, permits and paperwork is time on site, so it belongs in the quote.
If your site needs specific documents or credentials, tell us when you request a quote and we will confirm what we can provide before you commit.
Message WhatsApp on 0450 870 482, call, email service@granaworks.com.au or use the quote form on the contact section of our home page. We review the scope, check access and site rules, and send a written quote.
Grana Works does not publish fixed prices or hourly rates. Any dollar figure in a general article would be a guess for your job, so treat any headline price you see online as a starting point for a conversation, not a quote. A written quote that lists scope, materials, finish, travel and site requirements is the fair way to compare contractors.
