Falls from height are one of the most common causes of serious injury and death in construction. Whether it’s a roof clean, a gutter job or a repair, run through this checklist before anyone goes up.
How to use it: print this page or save it as a PDF, then tick each item on site. Free to use and share.
1. Plan the Job
SWMS prepared for work at height and signed by everyone on the job
Roof type, pitch, height and condition checked from the ground first
Fragile surfaces identified: skylights, old sheeting, brittle tiles
Asbestos checked: asbestos cement roofs are never pressure cleaned
2. Fall Protection
Edge protection, scaffold or an elevated work platform used where needed
Harness and anchor system used where edge protection is not practicable, with a rescue plan
Covers or mesh over skylights and fragile areas
Exclusion zone set up below the work area
3. Access and Equipment
Ladders rated, secured, on firm ground and extending at least 1 metre above the landing
Tools and materials secured so nothing can fall
Pressure equipment, hoses and leads checked before use
Power lines identified, with safe clearances kept
4. Weather and Conditions
No work on wet, icy or slippery roofs
No work in strong winds or storms
Heat stress planned for: water, shade and breaks
Enough daylight to finish safely
5. Finish Safely
Debris and waste lowered safely, never thrown
Gutters and downpipes checked clear
Edge protection removed only after everyone is off the roof
Photos and notes of completed work recorded
